Abstract :
Numerical simulations using a series of vehicle models with different levels of dielectric content have been used to investigate the impact of non-metallic parts on internal field distributions. Apart from glass, the dielectrics investigated have little impact on the internal field populations and average field levels. Nonetheless, these materials do modify local field levels, and these effects become more pronounced at higher frequencies. Above 1 GHz typical vehicle glazing panels increase average field levels for internal sources. At lower frequencies the glazing has little impact for internal sources or vertically polarized external sources. However, under horizontal plane wave illumination from the front of the vehicle the windscreen may reduce the field coupled into the interior at lower frequencies. The glazing results are also found to agree well with simple analytical predictions.
