A method for controlling search in a pure P2P file sharing network

In recent years, Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems have been widely used in the Internet. Particularly, P2P file sharing systems have emerged popularity and attract millions of users. However, there are problems such as copyright infringement, personal information leakage, and large portion of network traffic have occurred by P2P file sharing applications. One of the reasons of these problems is that a pure P2P network is an autonomous distributed system and does not have management and control mechanism of the files. This makes it difficult to control the file distribution and the traffic volume. As a solution of controlling the inappropriate file distribution, we had proposed a controlling method of the file searching. However, the previous method has enough room for the control efficiency. In this paper, we propose an improved file search controlling method by using uncooperative peers for the file sharing. The basic idea is that the control peers disturb the file search queries by setting up a lot of search links to peers, which have important roles in the search network. We apply the proposed method to “Winny”, one of the most popular P2P file sharing applications in Japan. The result shows that the proposed method improves the control efficiency.
