The coalbed methane(CBM) exploitation is not only access to clean energy and reduces coal mine disasters, but also decreases greenhouse gas emissions, which produces favorable economic and social benefits. But water resources (including surface water and groundwater) damage can not be ignored in CBM exploitation. According to drilling, cementing, logging, perforating, hydraulic fracturing and drainage characteristics at the various stages of CBM exploitation, the possible impacts on water resources are analyzed in each operating procedure, and protection countermeasures are prososed to prevent water resources damage, which has practical significance to guide sustainable development of CBM industry.
