Abstract :
This paper presents a new single-ended fault-location method based on impedance measurement for distribution power systems. The algorithm, which involves an iteration estimate of the prefault voltage and least square curve fitting, provides fast and accurate fault location by comparing the calculated line reactance between the fault point and the measurement point with the known line reactance. The fault voltage and current transients measured at the measurement point are transformed into the frequency domain by the fast Fourier transform (FFT), and in order to increase the speed and accuracy of fault location, only high-frequency transient information was used. The advantages of this new method, compared with traditional single-end impedance measurement fault-location algorithms (distance protection scheme), are demonstrated both through simulation and laboratory measurements.
