Abstract :
This paper discusses the effectiveness of haptics or tactile interaction on touch screens for universal communication service during an emergency or while traveling. The original idea was proposed by deaf people for communicating in an emergency, such as a disaster or accident situation. The solution consists of simple menu-like metaphors implemented on cards or on remote terminal equipment display of a public terminal unit. Previous research results showed that using cards shortened the time needed to communicate symptoms by 30%. This Universal Communication Service Card can be then used not only by deaf people but also by universal users such as foreigners. Human Centred Design is the underlying concept behind this research. It compares cards and remote terminal equipment display like iPhone. Assessors evaluated from the perspective of tactile sense applying originally designed Marble method and Multivariate Analysis. The results showed the remote terminal equipment display to be more favorable compared to cards in that it is quicker to reach the target card and back to the top page. This is particularly useful service when traveling.
