Abstract
The five provinces (Yunan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Sichuan, Chongqing) in the Southwest of China experience a long drought, which has no effective precipitation in most parts of Yunnan from September 2009 to April 2010. The drought is the largest in the Yunnan province in the passed one hundred years. This paper uses MPI (Microwave Polarization Index) to retrieve soil moisture, and the comparison and analysis indicate that the MPI method can be used to monitor the drought. Due to the low resolution of AMSR-E, many researches should be made further.
