Abstract :
Due to the expanding interconnection and more installation of underground cables, the issue of power system voltage stability has been receiving more attention. Power system voltage instability results mainly from loack of reactive power which plays an important role in supporting system bus voltage. Wide area measurements in large-scale power systems have become feasible with the technology of GPS-based synchronized phasor measurement units. Synchronized phasor measurements have been proven effective in many control and monitoring applications of power systems. The main purpose of this paper is to utilize the wide area information obtained via synchronized phasor measurements in the study of power system voltage stability. In this paper, a multi-area power system is studied, in which remote signals are acquired by means of Phasor Measurement Unit as input signals for the static var compensator. The method of PV curve analysis is used to investigate the power system voltage stability. It is found that the proposed static var compensator is effective in the improvement of power system voltage stability.
