Abstract
A novel smart antenna structure is presented for beam forming and diversity for the reception of geostationary earth orbit (GEO) as well as high elliptical orbit (HEO) satellite signals in the S-band. Two antenna structures are integrated at the same position requiring not more than the mounting volume of one standard single satellite antenna. Along with an appropriate circuit, the antenna set enables the capability of selecting the best antenna for diversity applications as well as the capability of beam forming towards any direction of a satellite. Measured results are given for the radiation patterns of the antennas, the return loss, the mutual coupling between the antennas, and for combined radiation patterns. The antenna diversity set is tested successfully for satellite systems in a multipath environment.
