First arrival detecting of seismic waves plays an important role in research of mineral resource and petroleum resource. Many methods and theories have been put forward so far, such as ratio of energy method, maximal amplitude method, fractal dimension method and neural network. However, these methods have their own disadvantages. Therefore, mutual information in information theory is introduced to the processing of seismic signals, and the paper puts forward a kind of mutual information method. What´s more, this method is improved in order to reduce amount of calculation. The paper combines traditional ratio of energy method and this mutual information method. And it has good results in the paper.
