Abstract :
This paper proposes a method for optimal placement of phasor measurement units (PMUs) to have a minimum Mean Square Error (MSE) from state estimation. A Differential Evolution (DE) algorithm is used to do a state estimation for a power system and calculation of MSE from results of state estimation and then determination of a minimum number of PMU needed to make a minimum MSE for system. The proposed method is applied on the IEEE 14-bus system in several cases to determine the optimal placement of PMUs in two sections when conventional measurements are available and are not available.
