Abstract :
Output of wind power generation fluctuates intermittently affected by wind speed. Uncertain fluctuation in wind power generations may disturb both voltage and frequency in inter-connected power grids. In this paper, mitigation of intermittency of wind power generation using battery energy storage system (BESS) is studied. The fluctuation of power output by renewable energy has two types of frequency. In order to mitigate the fast power perturbation, large rated power (kW) of battery is required but less rated energy (kWh) is required. For longer time usage such as time-shift and load leveling, large rated energy (kWh) of battery is required but less rated power (kW) is required. In this paper, typical waveform of wind generation is analyzed first. Based on the analyzed data, optimal capacities of battery are calculated in both kW and kWh.
