Abstract :
This paper has investigated lightning surges on a cable installed along a transmission tower, which becomes quite common in Japan, considering phase wires and ground wires based on a field measurement and EMTP simulations. It is found that the tower top and bottom voltages are higher in the case of the metallic sheath of the cable being grounded to the tower arm than those in the case of the sheath connected to a grounding lead. However, a voltage difference between the tower and the cable at the tower bottom is smaller in the former. It should be noted that surge voltages are much lower when phase and ground wires are considered than the voltages when the wires are neglected.
