Abstract :
A novel versatile active multi-functional microwave antenna is introduced, that enables the polarization of the radiated signal to be switched between vertical and horizontal linear, and left-hand and right-hand circular, whilst maintaining high performance. The antenna is constructed in a multi-layer planar configuration, and employs surface mounted FETs as the active switching elements. The performance of the antenna was investigated using electromagnetic simulation, and the results were confirmed by practical measurements on a 20 GHz prototype antenna. The form of the antenna makes it particularly suitable for integration in a hybrid microwave integrated circuits, and it offers the potential for obtaining high functionality from a very compact circuit structure.
