Abstract :
The structure and the task of electricity supply systems will dramatically change in the near future. Distribution systems are characterised by a large number of equipment and difficult access in urban and industrial environment. Therefore any modification has to be planned carefully and flexible solutions which are open for further improvement have to be selected. Based on the importance and the performance of electrical distribution systems the chances and the challenges for future distribution systems will be presented. Special emphasis is given on the new active components in distribution such as distributed generation and customers with smart meters. In addition to the standard components of electricity supply systems the need for communication and overlaying control systems is rising. As an example for an urban smart grid, the project “Masdar City” in Abu Dhabi is introduced. The main target to realize an example of the city of the future for 100´000 inhabitants, where all energy consumed is generated from renewable resources.
