Abstract :
The modern transmission system is becoming more and more complex with interconnected networks and more recently the connection of renewable power stations. Demands for reliable power supply are continually increasing. These demands are introducing new challenges to modern power supply systems. The appearance of an HVDC system can contribute to the demands. Since the first commercial HVDC application started in 1950s, the HVDC system has been widely recognized as having advantages in long distance bulk power delivery, economical areas, asynchronous interconnections, limiting short circuit current and environmental benefits. The objectives of this paper are to give a brief introduction to HVDC technology and provide a literature review of using HVDC technology to enhance the AC networks. It discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using HVDC to interconnect AC networks. Some HVDC applications will be discussed.
