Abstract :
Potentially lethal changes in plasma potassium concentrations occur during cardiopulmonary bypass. A simple and reliable ion-selective potassium analyzer suitable for continuous ex-vivo monitoring is described. The system incorporates a novel reference electrode design and uses an inverse modelling approach for on-line temperature compensation to minimize problems related to stability, drift and temperature changes. Traces illustrating its performance in aqueous potassium standards and in dog blood are shown.
