Abstract
Extinction coefficient due to rain is analyzed using gamma drop size distribution derived from the Marshall-Palmer model. Rain attenuation for specific drop size distribution is calculated at microwave frequencies as well as at optical wavelengths. The formula for the optical extinction due to rain is presented and applied to compare the effect of rain on free space optical and microwave communication links.
