Hand recognition is an important task in using the hand shape to the human identification problems. Many methods have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, we proposed a string matching method to recognize hand shapes. The reciprocal of compactness of the of finger shapes is used as the feature in the matching process. The feature is represented as a cyclic way and the cyclic string matching algorithm is conducted to recognize the hand shape. Some experiments have been conducted and the experimental results indicate that the proposed method can recognize the hand shapes effectively.
