Abstract :
Most mining operations in South Africa rely on compressed-air systems to facilitate production. Many opportunities exist to reduce the electrical energy consumption of these compressed-air systems. A compressor control system was developed. This system is capable of controlling compressors to improve the energy efficiency potential of the compressed-air supply by accurately matching the supply to the existing demand. This is achieved by continually monitoring and controlling compressor outputs. Furthermore, compressors are started, stopped, loaded or unloaded depending on the actual pressure requirement. This new compressor control system can play a very important role in DSM initiatives in the mining sector, where compressed air contributes up to 20% of the maximum demand in this sector.
