Abstract :
In this paper a novel architecture to measure, model, emulate, and estimate wireless access network characteristics is presented. For these purposes layer-2 block error patterns, which are very significant for the present channel state, are measured, modelled, and stored in a database. This database can be used to estimate the actual channel state or to emulate a certain radio link, which is illustrated by two end-to-end applications in a UMTS radio link: MobQoS, a quality tool to qualify the link by reverse estimation of the channel state, and Airem, a new radio channel emulator. The topology of the whole architecture is technology independent. In order to support different access technologies the system has to be trained accordingly.
