Abstract :
Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) is being implemented for on-line oscillation monitoring due to its advantages of enabling faster sampling and accurately measuring phasor information. Many modal analysis algorithms can be implemented due to this. However, bad parameter tuning or sampling at inappropriate intervals, though satisfying Nyquist-Shannon Sampling Criterion, can result into inaccurately estimating of oscillating frequencies and their associated damping factors. Hence, this paper investigates the potential impacts of the tuning parameters have towards the estimation effectiveness of Prony analysis and Kalman filter. Sequential Monte Carlo simulation approaches are proposed to assess the adequacy of WAMS sampling. In addition, a review of power system oscillations and its detection using Prony analysis and Kalman filter will also be presented in this paper.
