The four articles in this special section focus on the new advancements in the field of materials science. The articles discuss new capabilities available to the microwave engineers in the area of control materials and devices. These technologies are typically found in the front end of microwave transmitters and receivers and their performance specifications, such as loss, bandwidth, power handling, and response time impose important limitations on the overall system performance.
