Abstract :
In the current web service, a lot of interactive and multimedia contents are used for delivering information and entertainments. In particular, Adobe Flash, a Rich Internet Application (RIA) technology, is popular for publishing contents, advertisements, and multimedia on the web. Flash is widely accepted on many websites, because it provides attractive user interfaces, including animation, video, and interactivity for web pages. However, Flash has significant influence on the energy consumption indebted to its resource-intensive characteristics and its broad usage. In this paper, we investigate how energy can be wasted by heavy contents on websites, and explain the projected global energy consumption of web contents. Based on an energy consumption rating model for websites, we present how we can save energy if we modify the web content format without any change in software or hardware.
