Abstract
Blades of a novel wind turbine system based on the principles of impulse turbines were designed in 3D and tested by computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. This new turbine system is suitable to construct on the tops of high buildings in urban areas. A rotor with more than 20 blades is used to convert wind energy into mechanical energy in an internal chamber. In the upstream of this rotor, 25 guide vanes are fixed between a hub and the tunnel for changing the flow direction. Through CFD modelling in different conditions, both power output and coefficients were obtained. The modelling results have shown that the turbine blades have good potential for the new wind turbine system in an urban area.
