Abstract
A driving game for novice drivers to improve their hazard detection skills has been developed. The expected side-effect of the game was that novice drivers would learn to detect and react to potential hazards quickly. We found that the horizontal scan patterns of novice drivers became wider and "intelligent" in terms of depending on particular driving situations. Twenty-four undergraduate students participated in the hazard perception experiment. Half of the participants were trained by playing the hazard perception game. The experimental results confirmed that playing the hazard perception game is an effective way to improve the hazard detection skill of novice drivers.
