Abstract :
The global information technology (IT) industry has experienced many dramatic changes. Since the emergence of IBM personal computers in the 1980s to the prevalence of the internet and mobile communications, Taiwanese information technology industry survived and prospered in the past three decades. This research analyzed the interactions of the industry system and the development environment by an evolutionary perspective. Taiwan has successfully developed a reinforcing relationship with the international industry leaders, as a result moved up the value chain. Taiwan´s survival strategy during the rise and falls of the industry demonstrated a successful model for a latecomer to incrementally develop new core capabilities and thus become one of the industry leaders.
