Abstract :
Drift tube linear accelerator with focusing of longitudinal magnetic field produced by super conducting solenoid can be used in injector system of fast hydrogen (deuterium) atoms for heating thermonuclear plasmas. Accelerator is characterized by a large value of transverse acceptance which allows to use it for acceleration of ion beams with the value of beam current 1 … 5 A. Beam emittance growth in RF linac can result in serious limitations in achieved value of phase space density of the beam and particle losses. This effect was investigated via computer simulation using particle-in-cell method. It is shown that beam phase space distortion can be controlled by appropriate choice of the value of magnetic focusing field with respect to acceleration gradient.
