Abstract :
Recently the first Z-pinch load experiments were performed on ACE 4. Interesting results were obtained on two shots operating with 5 cm diameter neon gas puffs in direct drive mode (no operation of the radial plasma opening switch (POS)). Pinhole images obtained with implosion times greater than 300 ns suggested compression ratios of at least 25. If such implosion times ultimately prove feasible for operation with a POS, requirements for POS rise time and voltage could be significantly relaxed from present projections.
