Abstract :
The use of gyrotwistrons as a source for particle acceleration is discussed. Experimental results for a device utilizing a 440 kV, 200–245 A, 1 µs electron beam and a sharply tapered axial magnetic field are presented. Both fundamental and second harmonic operation are reported. Mode competition and its possible remedies are considered.
