Abstract
Crop identification is a critical first step for most agricultural monitoring systems. The ability to identify crop type makes it possible to estimate the area allocated to each crop type and thus compute relevant statistics providing essential information for crop control of area-based subsidies and furnishes direct inputs to crop production forecasting models. In recent years, with the development of remote sensing technology, the application of microwave remote sensing in agriculture is becoming more and more popular in remote sensing application research. The capabilities of SAR for discriminating crop type have been previously explored The paper presented herein aimed to brief the mechanism of crop identification and area monitoring using SAR data, at the same time, review the research progress of crop identification and area monitoring using microwave remote sensing at home and abroad, emphasis the necessity of the dryland crop identification and area monitoring using SAR At last, summed up the major trends of this application.
