Abstract
In the last few years, a significant research effort has been spent on both single ring resonators coupled to straight bus waveguides and multi-ring coupled resonators. In this paper main physical phenomena occurring in those structures and their most promising potential applications are briefly reviewed, with particular attention to the recent advances. Spectral properties of coupled rings are discussed and applications in the field of on-chip buffers for optical interconnects, nonlinear optics, angular velocity sensing, and group velocity manipulation are presented.
