Abstract :
Preventing waste contributes to a more efficient use of natural resources. The EU-funded project “Towards Zero Waste in Industrial Networks” (ZeroWIN) actively supports this by minimizing waste which accumulates from production processes or as by-products. Aim of the `ZeroWaste-approach´ is to decrease at least 30% of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions, to re-use and recycle at least 70% of waste and the reduction of fresh water utilisation of at least 75%. Case Study 9 of the project covers the automotive industry. The Tier1-suplier Continental leads the development and transfer to mass-production of a complex plastics component of a functional system which is highly security relevant and contains plastic recyclate. Findings and early results of this pilot application are presented. Barriers for practical implementation of the approach are discussed. The case study illustrates the interplay of an industrial network and innovation in automotive. The ZeroWaste-approach is implemented into practice.
