Abstract
In this paper we study the use of a beaconing mechanism for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication and information exchange in intelligent transportation systems. We provide analytical expressions for the probability of successful connection between roadside infrastructure and passing vehicles showing the dependence on the beacon frequency and distribution of the vehicle speed, as well as on the amount of information to be exchanged between vehicle and roadside infrastructure and the data rate of the wireless link established between the vehicle and roadside infrastructure. The performance of the beaconing mechanism is illustrated for specific scenarios which show that it can be used successfully used in conjunction with wireless systems using the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) standard as well as other types of systems.
