Abstract
The closure of high power diodes by plasma ablated from the surfaces of the electrodes by x-radiation from Z-pinch plasma loads is discussed and the theory of hydromagnetic insulation on which it is based is reviewed. We compare calculated results with those obtained from experiments and discuss the reasons why electrode materials as diverse as copper and aluminum behave similarly under hydromagnetically insulating conditions.
