Abstract :
This paper presents a back-to-back pulse width modulation (PWM) converter for the flywheel energy storage system (FESS), which store energy in the form of kinetic energy. The permanent magnet brushless DC machine (BLDCM) is used for energy conversion. Back-to-back PWM converter used in FESS improves power factor, reduces the harmonic content and controls the bi-directional flow of energy. The principle of operation and control strategies are analyzed. Also, simulation results are provided to validate the theoretic analysis.
