Abstract :
A novel method of dynamic segmentation of side lit backlight system for low power purpose was proposed in this paper. A segment is defined as an individual controlled light source or a group of light source, illumination a section of the backlight. Instead of conventional fixed area segmentation, the vertical boundary of the segment could be shifted according to the brightness of the adjacent segments. The segment with less bright pixels near the boundary of brighter segment could be restructured as two parts, the temporary area containing the bright pixels were transferred into the adjacent bright area, and the others still in the original segment. Therefore, the LEDs of this segment need not to light as peak and the power of backlighting system reduced. Moreover, based on the proper local dimming algorithm, the image quality of LCD display with side lit backlight system would not be declined.
