Abstract :
Biconical fiber tapers with asymmetric, micron-wide cross-sections were etched from standard single-mode fibers by hydrofluoric acid microdroplets. The tapers showed record-high group birefringences of BG ~ 0.017 and insertion losses <; 0.7 dB.
