Abstract :
In mobile communications in order to provide coverage in any possible area, it is mandatory to install Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) in many off-grid locations. The result of this necessity is that most of these BTS are powered by autonomous diesel generators. In this paper an improved Hybrid Power System (HPS) is proposed, which is based in real data from installed stations, has better techno economic characteristics than the conventional diesel power system and is equipped with the most recent technology. The existing, the proposed and a diesel-battery system are compared. The simulation results show that hybrid technology can offer an advanced economic solution and has also decreased gas emissions. This comparison is performed using the program Homer. The results of these simulations are mainly focused in the cost of energy (COE), the greenhouse emissions and the Net Present Cost (NPC) that these three particular systems have.
