Abstract :
In the present study, the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of the primary data center at the University of Maryland was evaluated experimentally. The IT load, cooling load, and electrical load were measured to evaluate the PUE of the data center. The cooling and electrical loads collectively comprise 60% of the total energy consumption. Based on the analysis, the PUE of the data center is 2.54. In addition, a simulation model was developed to investigate the thermo-fluid flow mechanism of the data center. Based on measurement and simulation results, the hot spot temperature of 39.4 °C at one of the Rack outlets was measured. The effect of various CRACs operating in the room on air distribution and cooling of the data center as a whole was also studied. Select energy saving opportunities were identified and recommended as measures to improve the energy efficiency of this data center.
