Abstract
Most modern building automation systems use closed, proprietary networking protocols and control systems. They are difficult to program, do not respond well to component failures, and are not easily expandable. This paper proposes an open system architecture based on modern networking middleware and service Oriented Architectures. An Event-Condition-Action framework for describing system behaviour is also proposed and explored.
