Abstract :
The study on effects of magnetic field in many engineering applications is not only an emerging trend since the later part of nineteenth century, but also a scope full research approach that provides different dimensions in solving traditional problems. In this project the variations of temperature in a journal bearing along with applied magnetic field is studied. By applying external magnetic field, the lubricant flow (typically a Ferro fluid/oil) in the journal bearing can be optimized so that optimum level of pressure is maintained to carry the shaft load and also is the viscosity and temperature. Current carrying wire models are utilized in applying the magnetic field and equations are formulated. These physical magnetic field models are discussed theoretically and results are discussed. Numerical analysis of temperature variation is carried out using ANSYS 13.0 that recorded a significant temperature reduction with specific magnetic field set-up. Experimentation is carried out validating the physical models and the software outputs. Physical models are valid enough to improve the performance of the journal bearings, with variations in the magnetic field strength and positioning.
