Abstract :
Tool vibration is a frequent problem in the manufacturing industry where metal cutting operations take place. It affects the surface finish of the work piece, tool life, and produce irritating noise. In order to restrain tool vibration in metal cutting, it is necessary to develop and analyse suitable methods which increases stability and also improves the cutting performance. The present investigation aims at analysing a tool holder along with Magneto Rheological (MR) damper during hard turning operation using computational method. MR material has received great attention due to their ability to reversibly change from a free flowing, liner, viscous liquid to a semi-solid when exposed to magnetic field in just few milliseconds. In this paper, electromagnetic analysis of the MR damper was performed and the MR damper has been characterised and also the tool holder was analysed with and without damper effect using ANSYS. From the static structural and the harmonic analysis results it was observed that the use of the MR damper reduces tool vibration effectively.
