Abstract :
Around the world, public transportation systems are switching to hydrogen-fueled engines as an emissions-free alternative to gasoline and diesel. However, most hydrogen available today is inefficiently generated from nonrenewable fossil fuels such as natural gas. An attempt is made in this work to produce hydrogen from the renewable, indigenous algae and a monoculture of green microalgae (Chlorella Pyrenoidosa). When compared to crop plants microalgae use sunlight more efficiently. Green algae split water into molecular hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight under special conditions. The effects of various parameters like CO2 sparging and artificial lighting on the algal growth rate were also studied. A total biohydrogen volume of 73.5 ml/L culture of indigenous algae and 44 ml/L culture of Chlorella Pyrenoidosa were measured using water displacement method.
