  • Abstract
This work proposes a smart load shedding technique that considers the current state of the grid and estimates the amount of load to be shed at the instant of formation of a microgrid fed by synchronous generator(s). This estimative is based on a simple analytical formulation and its implementation can be supported by the usage of a function available in commercial relays. Basically, the active power imbalance is calculated and the load relief is performed in underfrequency stages through an algorithm that chooses the minimum amount of loads to be shed respecting a priority list. Another advantage of the proposed method is to integrate nonintrusive appliance load monitoring at each consumer unit allowing real time update of load priority list and establishing an adaptive priority list. The results show the method efficiency in supplying high priority loads and maintaining system integrity.
