Abstract :
Marching Squares (MS), a well-known 2D isocontouring algorithm for image data, can produce an isocontour that lacks any sharp corner features of the true underlying structure´s boundary. Here, an extension to Marching Squares that can produce a contour with sharp corners is presented. Our extension involves first detecting locations in the image for which there is evidence that a sharp corner feature is present. Then, contour orientation characteristics of regions nearby such locations are exploited to produce an isocontour containing sharp corners. Results from application of the extension are also presented here.
