Abstract
Accurately estimating the residual strength and discard/retirement criteria of used rope is becoming increasingly necessary in applications dependent on high modulus synthetic ropes. Precise measurement of residual strength on a used synthetic rope requires destructive testing of the line. This paper investigates the correlation between visual assessment and residual rope strength through statistical analysis of damaged HMPE ropes in order to establish accurate inspection criteria.
