Abstract :
A general method to design planar lightwave circuit (PLC) digital modulators of any order and modulation format is presented, using only star couplers and a reduced number of straight phase modulators (PM) or electro absorption modulators (EAM), with respect to conventional schemes. In addition, no additional phase shifter is required. Detailed design guidelines for quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) and phase shift keying (PSK) of any order are given.
