Abstract :
The data storage volumes that support nowadays systems have a continuous need to increase. Disk addition solves the problem of increasing on RAID systems, but after scaling we face with the problem of the data redistribution. Different approaches redistribute data when a disk addition is performed. In this paper, we will discuss some of these approaches that make the redistribution process and especially we will focus on FastScale, which results with a high performance in RAID-0. The contribution of this paper is the proposal of one algorithm that makes FastScale adaptable for RAID-5 systems. Our algorithm includes parity bits in the redistribution process of FastScale. The algorithm is added between the phases of the block redistribution and computation of the parity value. Given the fact that we do not change the main strengths of FastScale, the performance of RAID-5 system must be at high levels.
