Abstract :
This is the second publication of the first joint Special Issues with the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics (TPEL) on emerging applications. The first publication of the first issue appeared in TPEL, November, 2012. The second joint Special Issue appeared with the IEEE Transactions on Industry Applications (TIA), December, 2012. Both of these two issues served as a precursor for a brand new joint journal on emerging and selected topics in power electronics. The IEEE Technical Activity Board approved the creation of the new joint journal. The full name is the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics (IEEE JESTPE). Preparation is underway and the new journal is scheduled to go online in 2013. Because of the record number of manuscripts submissions to the first Special Issue (a total of 245 manuscripts), we have organized the accepted papers into two publications. This is the second publication with a total of 15 papers. The second publication of the first Special Issue covers a wide spectrum of the areas with cutting-edge research and development in respective fields. The first group of four papers addresses the special design issues for power converters. They cover SiC applications, high-frequency conversion, as well as wide input range applications. The second group of eight papers focuses on power converter emerging applications. They cover a wide range of topics: from cell phone power to traction power to offshore wind power to photovoltaic modules to dc macrogrids and to distributed generation. The last group of three papers discusses energy transfer and energy harvesting techniques from subwatts to MWs.
