Abstract :
This paper addresses the causes and effects of a total collapse of power system aboard ships and offshore platforms as well as how to mitigate and recover from these major failures. The catastrophic failure of power sources can cause a blackout condition which often creates havoc for a vessel. Various causes of this failure, chaotic effects from these failures and ways to mitigate failures are presented here. Electric plant design considerations for the safe operation of ships and offshore platforms are discussed.
